"Pros: A tranquil, comfortable traditional Bijagos guest house with character on Bubaque, the main island of the Bijagos Archipelago, just off Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. Run and owned by an interesting Spanish guy in conjunction with 2 or 3 local guys. Situated in the only real town/village of the island, it's walking distance to a supermarket, other hotels/restaurants and shops, including a souvenir store selling locally made handicrafts. Guest House Saldomar has 7 private rooms, some on ground level and others up steps. Most rooms have double beds . Rooms are made of concrete and wooden with open windows closed by wooden doors. The room I stayed in has a large comfy double bed, moskito net, shower, separated from the bedroom by a semi-walled partition. Sink in the shower area with running water. Extra water in buckets in case of water shortage in the shower hoze. Bathroom decorated with seashells. Room has several tables made of wood and/or bamboo. One plug socket in room. One small rubbish bin in bathroom. Lights in room. Small and large towels provided. Bed has bed sheets and good, thick pillows. Bedding and towels can be changed on request. Free bottle of water with drinking provided in all rooms. Water is filtered and recycled and is drinkable. No toilets in rooms, but close to most rooms. One dry toilet, where ash is put into toilet after pooing. 3 toilets with water. Free Wifi in all rooms and throughout property. Fairly good speed, occasionally slow, depending on number of guests using it. Saldomar has wonderful grounds, a large garden area with terace and steps down to a rough beach. Many plants including cactus. Also banana trees and other fruits. Small fountain that recycles the water. Eco-friendly guest house. Toilet paper is biodegradable.
Restaurant offers paid breakfast, lunch, dinner. The owner is a great cook. Excellent, tasty food. Plenty of seating options, bamboo chairs outside every room with cushions , swing seats and 2 hammacks.
Cons: No fant/air conditioning in room, lots of moskitos at certain of day, usually mid/late afternoon, less at night. Only the owner speaks English, so when he's unavailable only Portuguese/Spanish and very simple English is spoken. Long walk to beaches, some transport, but not cheap. No toilet in room. Internet can be very slow and occasional stops working altogether. Room slightly expensive for one person per night. Cheaper for 2 people sharing. The paths are a little rough to walk on." ~Tony
