"Pros: This is a luxurious, spacious appartement with two bathrooms. Great views and a balcony with the morning sun. It is a short walk downhill to Funchal town. And .. uphill to get home. We were two people and each had our own bedroom & bathroom; luxury! One of the first café's down the hill was our 'local' for aperitives; unsure of the name. We called it ''the pink tables''; you will see when you come across this lovely place. Try their snacks! Mila was very helpful in her instructions to get to the appartement. As we rented a car, and the remote for the gate is in the appartement; she opened the gate remotely so we didn't have to wait with the car in the narrow street. It is so nice to have a parking spot with this appartement! Cons: It was a chilly week and hence not too warm inside; bring a jumper (see other review as well). It is normal, though, for warmer countries to not have proper heating; so we did bring jumpers! Taxi's find it a tad hard to find this as it is just behind a massive hotel. Even though straight behind, this means a different route/street. Make sure uber/bolt don't adjust the pick-up point in a way that you cannot make it!" ~Annick

"Pros: A Perfect Stay at Quintinha de São João – Truly Unforgettable We had the most incredible experience at Quintinha de São João during our recent stay in Madeira. From the moment we arrived, everything was perfect. The staff were genuinely warm, welcoming, and attentive – they made us feel completely at home. Our room was spacious and beautifully maintained, with a stunning balcony that looked out over the lush gardens and offered breathtaking views across Funchal. Every detail, from the peaceful surroundings to the thoughtful touches in the room, added to the overall sense of calm and comfort. This trip was especially meaningful as we were celebrating my retirement with family, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect setting. The atmosphere, the people, and the beauty of the hotel made it truly unforgettable – a celebration we’ll cherish forever. I would 100% recommend Quintinha de São João to anyone visiting Madeira. "Pros: Monica met us on time when we arrived, showed us around then provided a key to the access gate. She called later in the week to arrange check out - all very relaxed and professional. We parked in a dedicated space in the underground parking lot then caught the lift to the 3rd floor, very easy. The apartment was exactly as shown on the photographs on booking.com - a beautiful, spacious, modern, well furnished apartment over 2 floors with lovely views from the big balcony which was a short walk to the centre of Funchal (about 15 mins). The spacious open plan lounge & dining area had comfortable sofas and a big table with a spectacular staircase in the middle, the contemporary kitchen was also large with lots of storage space (however both the kettle and toaster needed to be replaced). Upstairs there were big bedrooms (the master was huge with a separate dressing area) with masses of storage space and large comfortable beds. The generous bathrooms also had plenty hot water and good showers. There was a strong wi-fi signal throughout with extenders in most rooms. The balcony was a lovely place to sit with superb views both night and day, a shame that a new hotel has obscured the view of the harbour. I would be more than happy to live somewhere as luxurious as this. The location was ideal with only a 15 minute walk to the cathedral and a supermarket, it took about 25 minutes to get to the old town and the cable car station. As we were staying in January we didn't use the outdoor pool and, due to the low sun, it was mainly in the shade anyway. Despite the above we did have some issues which might mean we would not book it again. Cons: The description suggests that there is access to a 'solarium' which includes a hot tub, when we went to look at it and were shown a poster by someone using the gym which states that this area is not available to guests, only residents. So no access for us to the hot tub, indoor pool or gym. The description states that it is soundproof but the resident below came round at 23:05 to complain we were talking and it was stopping him sleeping so we should go to bed! This was normal level talking with no music or TV. He repeated this 3 days later at 23:10." ~Barry
