"Pros: This review is a combination: we reserved at Shandrani, but because Shandrani was being renovated, we ended up staying at Paradis (both Beachcomber properties in Mauritius). Upon return, I asked for advice on how to review such a stay, but the customer service has declined so much at Booking that I decided not to wait endlessly for a response.
So, Paradis is more upscale than Shandrani (where we stayed last year). True to its name, the location is beautiful, the food is outstanding (much more so than at Shandrani), and the Junior Suite we had was spacious and welcoming, with a large balcony and a view on the ocean. The food themes and entertainment repeat every seven days, the duration of our stay, so each evening was different for us. For this, we did not try the restaurants that require reservations, enjoying the main buffet, which was great. In particular, we appreciated the extensive use of fresh local seafood (sushi, sashimi, ceviche, etc), and the variety and quality of French cheeses. Many of the guests were French or German, and some appeared to be repeat guests.
The water sports at the nautical club were outstanding. Windsurfing, hobie cat sailing, snorkeling, and glass-bottom boat tours were generally available (although the first two on a limited schedule, subject to wind and tide availability). We particularly enjoyed the glass-bottom boat tours with Silvio, who never failed to show us the most amazing underwater sights. One day, he went above and beyond, taking us to see sea turtles despite the challenging tides: one couple on the boat were spending their last afternoon there and had not had a chance to see turtles. At the nautical club, we appreciated the patience of Dilan and John in providing basic and ongoing instruction in windsurfing and sailing.
The gym offered multiple group classes and had a nice steam room, which we used at the end of the day to warm up before dinner. We did not get to use the spa, and the tennis and padel courts.
Cons: On the background of the very positive impressions above, we did have a couple of recommendations for changes. The entertainment tended to be limited to music, and a couple of nights, the DJ was playing music nobody wanted to dance on. Other nights had DJs who got the entire audience on their feet. It appeared to us that more of the second would be good.
Also, other types of entertainment (dance, comedy, etc) might provide some welcome variety." ~Bogdan
